Barrie Colts night

Last Saturday night was a really good night. My family and i went to the Barrie Colts game, the hockey team from Barrie, the previous step to the NHL.

We were having tacos and burritos for dinner at 7:15pm when Emma said about this game. We didn't think much about it and bought five tickets for the game that started in 15 min. We finished dinner and we arrived at Barrie Molson Centre at 8 ish, just before the second period. The game was too long, we were done around 10pm. They played against Mississauga, and we won 5 - 2 !!

It was awesome, I really liked it!! I am used to see my host sisters playing hockey, but that was completely different. I just couldn't stop wondering how much time the players have been playing hockey in their lives. They skated like if they were running, that is for me the most difficult part in hockey. The used the stick as a third arm, and the goalies were amazing. 

Los Barrie Colts es el equipo local de Barrie, el paso previo a la NHL, la liga nacional de hockey. Por así decirlo, los Colts es como un equipo de segunda división, intentando llegar a primera. Los jugadores no son gente famosa, pero muchos de ellos llegan a las ligas profesionales. Tanto el partido como el ambiente fue una pasada, gritos, ánimos, la mascota, todos con el jersey del equipo... una pasada.

Norika & Iyo

Norika & Iyo, two Japanese students I'm so glad to have met.

They came at the end of January and they left last Friday so they only stayed here for one month. They came with their Japanese school, Kasukabe, and they always come in couples, that's why two of them stayed in the same house.

Iyo was 14 years old when she came but we celebrated her birthday here, while Norika is 14 too. They came to my school so we had to take the school bus together. Once there, they went with their Japanese friends and they used to do some English activities, games or sports. They also had the chance to visit Niagara Falls, Toronto or to go snow tubing, which is really fun!

Unfortunately it was the worst month of the year when the coldest week was around -40 °C so we couldn't do as much things as we wanted.

The worst part was that they were always speaking Japanese, and that was reaaallly annoying!! They knew no English, believe me, so it was really difficult and funny at the same time when we were talking to them. They were always together so they worked as one, Iyo was the one who talked to us in English while Norika was used to speak in Japanese while Iyo tried to translate her.

Japan is such an awesome country but so different at the same time. When we first showed them the kitchen they didn't even know what a toaster is!! What was really annoying is that THEY USED TO WAKE UP AT 5AM!! I have no idea what they were doing but I guess it was because of their culture, cause Norika once told us that her grandma wakes up at 1am (yes, just after midnight) and she goes for a walk for 3 hours, so she has breakfast at 5 am ish. Crazy, isn't it?

Whatever, I hope they had a great time in Canada and I really liked this experience, to host international students from a different country than mine.

Watching the Super Bowl

On the way back home, one of the coldest days of the year

Two days before they left, in a goodbye party with all the 120 Japanese students that came to Barrie for a month. They showed us some pictures of their Canadian adventure and some Japanese typical dance and song. 

Super Bowl 2015

Uno de los acontecimientos deportivos más importantes de América, la Super Bowl se celebró el domingo 1 de febrero. Nosotros lo vimos en casa, con dos familias amigos de mi familia y nos reunimos muchas personas. Además, que hace dos semanas que vinieron dos japonesas, Norika e Iyo que se quedan para un mes, y no se quisieron perder la Super Bowl. 

Las noticias dijeron que se consumió muchísimos kilos de pizza y muchísimos litros de ketchup, pero nosotros cenamos alitas de pollo, chile y nachos con salsa, super típico para una fiesta con amigos. 

El partido empezó a las 6:30pm y jugaron los Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots. Todos en casa iban con los patriots pero yo iba con los Seahawks. No tengo ni idea de football pero Seattle es el estado vecino a Oregon y además que Macklemore nació allí jajaja. Pero al final ganaron los Patriots a 22-24.

El halftime es sin duda lo que más llama la atención en la Super Bowl y este año le tocaba a Katy Perry. Fue una actuación impresionante donde lo que más me llamó la atención fue los millones de dólares que se tuvieron que gastar para montar ese espectáculo.

Fue una tarde genial, y la primera vez que veo en directo un evento tan importante como la Super Bowl. Una experiencia más que se añade a mis lista canadiense :)

Acoger a un estudiante para pagar las facturas (?)

Escribo esta entrada un domingo por la noche pero ya la llevo queriendo publicar mucho tiempo.

Vi este título una vez en google y la verdad es que no se que pensé cunaod lo vi, se me revolvieron las tripas. 

Un estudiante, normalmente adolescente, con ganas de pasárselo bien y disfrutar, tiene la oportunidad de irse al extranjero no solo a hablar otro idioma, sino a conocer un nuevo país, una nueva cultura y nuevas gentes. Una de las cosas más importantes en un abroad exchange es la familia de acogida. Son ellos quienes van a actuar como padres y a veces hermanos, los primero a los que tienes que acudir cuando te pase algo o simplemente cuando necesites un abrazo. Te tienen que tratar como uno más de la familia, e intentar que pases un tiempo inolvidable.

Por supuesto que acoger a un estudiante es mucho trabajo y mucho dinero, y por supuesto veo normal que a las familias se las pague cierta cantidad por acoger a un estudiante, pero sincermante, como digo en el título, me revuelve las tripas cuando leo lo de "host a student to pay your bills". 

La familia del estudiante a lo mejor ha hecho esfuerzos imposibles por hacer que su hijo pueda estudiar fuera, porque es muy caro eso de estudiar en el extranjero, y en mi caso no he tenido ese problema. Pero el dinero que pagan las familias a las familias de acogida es para la manutención de su hijo, tanto comida, luz y agua como lo que se haría en una familia normal. El dinero que se recibe cada mes por parte de la familia del estudiante se tiene que invertir en eso y en nada más que no incluya al estudiante.

Me parece vergonzoso y de mala gente que la gente acoja a estudiantes solo por el dinero, porque sincermante es mucho dinero lo que hay entre medias. Pagar solo comida, luz y agua al estudiante y quedarte con el resto para tus propios capricho me parece repugnante. Es un dinero que le pertenece al estudiante, pero que las familias, como "sustitutos" de sus padres, tienen que administrar y asegurarse de que el estudiante tiene todo lo necesario y que no le falta nada.

El estudiante, que viene a pasarlo bien, a conocer un nuevo idioma, nuevo país y nueva cultura, que viene con ganas de pasarlo genial y de tener un tiempo inolvidable. Mientras tanto, la familia de acogida solo se preocupa del dinero que viene consigo y del provecho que se le puede dar.

Lo vi en google y me metí para informarme de lo que se decía y no lo podía creer. Un student es para hacer que pase uno de los mejores momentos de su vida, y no para pagar tus facturas. Es vergonzoso.

No se quién estará leyendo esto, pero si alguna vez acogéis a un estudiante, sea como sea o sea de donde sea, aseguraos de que pase un tiempo inolvidable, ya que es muy difícil estar fuera de tu propia casa. Que no os llame el dinero y que solo os llamen las ganas de tener un estudiante en vuestra casa, que conozcáis su cultura y que conozca la vuestra.

Snow tubing :D

Snow tubing is as fun as it sounds. "It is the best fucking thing in the whole world" Allegra said haha.

Eso de levantarte y ver nieve se ha hecho tan normal como el respirar, así que qué mejor que aprovecharla e irse de snowtubing. El 2 de enero fui con Allegra, Melissa y Avery y nos los pasamos genial. Consiste en montarte en un "flotador" enorme y tirarte por una colina de nieve. En serio, mola muchísimo, aunque la primera vez da mucha impresión y te recuerda a lo alto de una montana rusa hahaha. Después, un chocolate caliente viene genial :)

La póxima vez que fui de snow tubing fue el viernes pasado, con un club del instituto y fue igual o mejor que la primera vez, Esta vez fui con Roser, de Barcelona, y Lucero, de Méjico, y nos lo pasamos genial. Nos tirábamos de tres, en parejas o de una en una, y nos pudimos tirar unas 15 veces! Después, como de costumbre, un hot chocolate y s'mores al lado de la hoguera :)

Christmas time :)

Uno de los días más especiales y a la vez más duros cuando estás lejos de casa. Llevo toda la semana depre pero hoy ha sido sin duda uno de los mejores días de mi vida. Día de Navidad, en Canada, regalos, cenas, en familia... ha sido todo increíble. Gracias a mi familia de allí que está siempre a mi lado y aunque esté lejos los tengo más cerca que nunca. Y mil gracias a mi familia de aquí, por acogerme y tratarme como una más de la familia, por hacer de estos días unas Navidades inolvidables.

One of the most special days of the year and one of the hardest at the same time when you are not at home. It has been a really upset week but today has been one of best days in my life. Christmas day, in Canada, presents, food, in family... It has been amazing. Thanks to my family there who is always by my side although I am far away I am even closer to them. And thank you so much to my family here, for hosting me and treating me as another member of the family, for this unforgettable Christmas.

Santa arrived last night and he has been so good with us! We had a wonderful breakfast in family and we opened all of the presents!! Then turkey dinner and Christmas desserts. I will always love being in family, with such a good family as I have here, thanks everyone who made possible this unforgettable Canadian Christmas!

New Year's Eve was so different but it was good though. We went to a party in Orillia and we had so much fun! I could do skype with my family and I took 12 Conguitos instead of the 12 grapes, but I took at 6pm (at 12pm in Spain). We then did a countdown and we said Hi to the new year. 

2015 has arrived in a very unusual but special way and I hope it goes as well as 2014 finished, because a lot can happen in a year :)

Kempenfelt Cup

Kempenfelt Cup, a hockey tournament in which four high schools in Barrie played against each other: Eastview, North, Bear Creek and Nantyr.

It was on december 17th, just before Christmas break at Barrie Molson Center. There were a lot of people from each school. We dressed in blue with gold and red stuff, we looked really good!

Eastview arrived to the final but we didn't win, we got second place.

Hockey games, songs, cheers, photos, food, dance team and screams!! We had so much fun there!!
